Years ago, I saw a picture titled “The Most Beautiful Suicide” by Robert Wiles, which was taken of a woman named Evelyn McHale. Evelyn had jumped from the 86th floor of the Empire State building and landed on a limousine. Somehow, the way she landed looked impossibly serene, like she was sleeping rather than tragically dead.
Even though it was morbid, I felt the need to create a painting of her—not in the embrace of twisted metal, but in an infinitely gentler dream world.
